Full U16 AI Round-up

What a great Championship and Shield this turned out to be, with many surprise results in the closing stages.

Well done to Kinvara U16s who took the Shield title after a hard earned win over the never say die Killimor side, while in the Championship Final it was victory to Athenry who scored a superb win over a fancied TAD side, who never really performed to their normal level in the final.

Kinvara's group campaign started off with a narrow defeat at home to Athenry, in a match we really should have won. This was followed by a full collapse against Kilconieron and an embarressing defeat. Next up was Ardrahan and another close battle. We were primed for victory at half-time, but it was the blue neighbours who finished strongly. We next played Killimor at home, and this was another close match. We led by 5 points early in the second half, but two fast goals for them led them on to victory. There was then a break for the exams, with at that stage us really out of contention of a top four finish. Our next game on the resumption was against Gort. Unfortunately we could not field, as out of our County Final panel of 20, we were in fact missing 8. This had a serious effect on training also, as we seem to be severely hit compared to other clubs what with lads gone to the Gaeltacht, injuries and others gone on holidays. We did manage to have just 15 lads for our next match against TAD but were missing several big players. This told in the end as TAD ran our comfortable winners. However, that match was a turning point almost, with the Kinvara lads putting in their most honest and disciplined performance to date. Our last match was against Kiltormer, who credit to them still travelled over although they had only 13 players. We played them alright and although we lost, that match to be conceded due to them not having 15 lads.

Next up for Kinvara was a Shield semi-final against our old rivals Gort. We again had to start without full strength, and this told as they led by 11 points with 18 mins left. However a brave comeback by Kinvara brought a memorable two point win.
And what can we say about the Shield Final! A brillant display by the Kinvara lads who dug deep to hold off the brave and spirited challenge from Killimor.

So, a rather up and down sort of season for Kinvara U16s. There was lows but the important thing was we learned and finished on a couple of big highs.
Credit to all the players and mentors who gave so much during the year.
