Kinvara GAA would like to express our condolences to the family of Miko Waites, who passed away yesterday.
Miko was an influential hurler for our club in a glory period in the 1950's.
He first played minor hurling in 1945, and continued with our first team right up to 1962. He won South Hurling Junior Hurling medals in 1952, 1953, 1959, 1961 and 1962, awell as a County Junior Hurling medal in 1959.
He must have been a joy to watch in full flow on the pitch, as expressed in these snippets of match reports from the era:
"Waites was a hard working player who helped establish supremacy in the midfield area",
"The Kinvara side who had the winning foundation at midfield where Waites was supreme.",
"...Waites was outstanding in the first half.",
"That fine player Waites was in great fettle",
"...Miko Waites and his wonderful hurling artistry".
