Preview 1......Kinvara v Portumna

posted 25 Apr 2013, 04:24 by Unknown user
Round 1, Galway Senior Hurling Championship
28th April  in Loughrea at 1:30pm

(as per today's Connacht Tribune 25/04/13)

Out of the first choice 20 players in 2012, Kiinvara manager Ollie Bergin says approximate half are unavailable for a myriad of reasons. Two central figures, Jonathan Kavanagh and Damien Huban, have retired; the Curtin cousins, Niall (Australia) and Cathal (Brazi), have emigrated; while Alan Leech (knee), Dara Smith (groin) and teenager Ronan Kilkelly (dislocated hip) are sidelined through injury. In addition, Ger Mahon and Conor Kavanagh are just returning from knee and hand injuries respectively. Defender Shane Quinn will captain the side.

Whispers on the wind would indicate Portumna - under the captaincy of Ollie Canning - are ready to pounce for a first title in four years but new manager Frank Canning, who is assisted by trainer Noel Larkin and selectors Mike Monaghan, Ciaran Ryan and John Madden, stresses that until they surpass their recent quarter-final results of recent years, only then can such notions be examined.

At any rate, the three-time All-Ireland champions have one main injury worry in Leo Smith (groin) - the manager says he is "touch and go" - while 2012 centre-back Michael Ryan has not yet returned to full training. Ollie Canning, Eoin Lynch, Andy Smith, Damien Hayes and Joe Canning will once again backbone the side.

Verdict: Portumna

Last meeting: 2012 (Group), Portumna 2-22, Kinvara 1-11

Match Odds: Portumna 1/20, Draw 16/1, Kinvara 8/1.
