SHC: Kinvara v Ardrahan...our previous meetings

posted 26 Apr 2012, 05:30 by Unknown user
Considering the number of times we have met clubs like Gort, Beagh and Clarinbridge in recent championships, it is amazing to think that our last championship meeting with neighbours Ardrahan goes back 17 years to 1995.

Overall, we have met Ardrahan 8 times as follows:

1979 Round 2 (knockout) Kinvara 7-7, Ardrahan 2-5
1980 Group: Kinvara 5-6, Ardrahan 1-11
1982 Group: Ardrahan 3-11, Kinvara 2-4
1988 Group: Ardrahan 2-16, Kinvara 2-6
1991 Group: Ardrahan 1-10, Kinvara 1-9
1992 Group: Ardrahan 1-17, Kinvara 4-4
1994 Group: Kinvara 1-9 (0-8), Ardrahan 0-8 (1-5)
1995 Group: Ardrahan 2-11, Kinvara 2-9

Summary:
Ardrahan were kings of club hurling in the 1970's, winning three titles. They won in '74 and '75 when Kinvara were a junior club, and won again in 1978. We met them in 1979 with them as reigning county champions. But the shock of the year went to Kinvara as a seven goal "smash and grab" saw the seasiders triumph.
Kinvara were to repeat the win the following year in the group stages with five more goals.
The next four meetings went all Ardrahan's way as they won in '82, '88, '91 and '92.
Next up was the county quarter-final in 1994. After a replay Kinvara took the honours in Kenny Park in a hard fought match. Revenge came swift for Ardrahan, as the following year they beat us in the group stages.

Although we havent met in 17 years, they is still plenty of rivalry between us. I suppose the fact they we met 3 times in 4 years from '79-'82, and then 4 times in 5 years from '91-'95, means that there was a serious rivalry back then. The matches were so intense that there is no doubt that there are still several scores to be settled all these years later.

This is what championship hurling is all about........knock-out hurling against old rivals, neighbours, best friends, cousins, in-laws and even wives!

Another interesting point is from 1978 to 1995 one person played in all 8 championship matches for Kinvara against Ardrahan, covering 18 years!!! Guess who? Answer at bottom of page.

Here are some of the teams from those matches:
1979
OUTSIDERS KINVARA CRUSH CHAMPIONS
Kinvara 7-7, Ardrahan 2-5
County champions Ardrahan hit the dust in spectacular fashion at Ballindereen by a Kinvara scoring machine. The winners had great performances all over, but none so more than fullback Kevin Huban, and the full forward line of John Huban, Declan Brogan and Colm Muldoon. Kinvara led by 3-4 to 0-5 at the break, but everyone expected Ardrahan to flex their muscles in the second half. It was never to be.
