Senior Championship Group qualifiers
Group A

St Thomas, Portumna, Killimordaly, Clarenbridge

Portumna 1-16 St Thomas 2-11
Talked up all week as the battle of the champions, Portumna and St Thomas served up a very exciting and at times very physical championship game in the first game in group A in Athenry. St Thomas came in as All Ireland champions but it was not very evedent in the first twenty minutes as Portumna showed why they were three times All Ireland winners with some wonderful hurling and great scores espectially from Damien Hayes in paarticular. St Thomas opened the scoring with a point from Anthony Kelly but soon Portumna took over with first a brilliant goal from Damien Hayes. Joe Canning and Hayes added some more great points as Portumna lead 1-08 to 0-03 after 19 mins. St Thomas then finally responded when Conor Cooney scored a brilliant goal after cutting in along the end line. A futher goal followed from Gerard Murray and suddenly it was game on as the half time score line left just three points between the sides 1-10 to 2-04. This half also saw some unsavery incidents on a few occasions as play got very tough. The second half was very even with Joe Canning in particular keeping Portumna at artms length from St Thomas at all times, Joe included one of his class line balls points. Time finally ran out on St Thomas on a final score line of 1-16 to 2-11.

Clarenbridge 1-13 Killimordaly 1-13
Killimordaly who were given the group of death in many people's view put that idea to bed on their first appearance in the Galway championship for 2013 when they held former All Ireland champions Clarenbridge to a draw in Athenry. A long range point from centre half back and man of the match keith Kennedy saved Killimordaly in the end. The sides were level eight times in the game with Clarenbridge just ahead 0-08 to 0-07 at the break. Paul Coen and Eanna Ryan got some great scores for both sides. The two goals in the game came within sixty seconds of each other from Paul Madden and Christy Bannon. This result will be a great boost to last year's Intermedaite champions.

Group B
Mullagh, Turloughmore, Gort, Ardrahan

 Ardrahan 0-23 Mullagh 0-19
Ardrahan who were playing their fourth game in this year's championship proved just to sharp in the end of an exciting group B game in Loughrea. There was never much between the sides all through with the half time score line proving this with Ardrahan leading 0-10 to 0-09. Maurice Callanan who had returned home this year is proving a huge addition to the team as he scored thirteen points in this game. Jonathion Glynn and david kennedy aldo got some good scores. For Mullagh who had real stars in Davy Glennon and Cathal Dervan, this is a real setback. In the end Ardrahan was just too good.

 Turloughmore 1-16 Gort 1-16
The other two sides in Group B meet in Athenry with former champions Gort slight favourites. In the opening half it was all Turloughmore as they found scores much easier to come on and lead 1-11 to 0-08 at the break. The wonderful freetaking of Ronan Badger and Gerry Quinn was very important in the opening half with Darren Shaughnessy also getting some great scores from play for Turloughmore. We also had a brilliant point from county star Fergal Moore. For Gort Richie Cummins was in brilliant form getting some great points from play. The second half belonged to Gort as Turloughmore failed to score for the opening 15 minutes and the gap was down to two on many ocasions and with time almost up Paul Killilea pounced for a winning goal for Gort or so we thought only for county Minor Conor Shaughnessy to score the levelling point in injury time in a good game.

 Group C
Castlegar, Craughwell, Loughrea, Kinvara

Loughrea 0-17 Kinvara 0-13
Loughrea and Kinvara served up an entertaining and all times close championship game in group C in the newly revamped Gort. Neil Keary got the first two scores of the game for Loughrea before the remarkably accurate Conor kavanagh shot two for Kinvara. County star Johnny Coen was brilliant all through this half three points from play. Equally good was David Huban for Kinvara who dominated the midfield area setting up many chances. Loughrea lead 0-10 to 0-08 at the breakand with wind assistance to come Kinvara would have been hopeful of an upset. Loughrea used all their experience though to close out the south Galway sides chances with Sean Sweeney dominating now at wing back they held on for a hard earned victory. Johnny Maher lead the way with some great point scoring. man of

Castlegar 1-17 Craughwell 1-14
Castlegar got the better of Craughwell in Athenry in the battle of the Connacht Tribune sports reporters Stephen Glennon and John McIntyre. craughwell only really started to hurl in the second half as the city side lead 0-10 to 0-04 at the break. Michael coughlan goaled for Craughwell to give them hope in the second half and after dermot Ryan equalised and Niall Healy put them ahead it looked like the comeback was complete only for Dean Higgins to come up late with a crucial goal. This is a big setback for Craughwell and now they must defeat both Loughrea and Kinvara top qualify.

 Group D
Tommy Larkins, Padraig Pearses, Kiltormer, Beagh

Padraig Pearses 0-16 Kiltormer 0-13
