KINVARA 2-8..........MULLAGH 2-7

Kinvara U14 hurlers pulled off a fine display to produce a great performance and a great win over a very good Mullagh side. Last year Mullagh beat us 8-9 to 1-1 at U13 grade, and that result was overturned 12 months later as the Kinvara  side put in the club performance of the year.

Kinvara played with the advantage of the wind in the opening half and took full advantage of it. Cathal O'Dwyer at full forward was causing lots of problems and he was ably assisted by Colm Keady and freetaker Ger Linnane. With our backs not giving away much, it was Kinvara who led at the interval by 0-8 to 0-4.

The fear in the second half was that perhaps we didnt score enough with the wind advantage and would we be able to hold off the expected Mullagh second half challenge. But Kinvara got the best start to the second half as an early attack resulted in a well worked Luke Connors goal. That goal seemed to stun Mullagh and had them now chasing this match. To a man, the Kinvara team were holding firm and were not making life easy for Mullagh fowards or backs. Mullagh did manage to pull back a goal and two more points, but again Kinvara struck for a second green flag through the stick of Colm Keady. This again put 5 points between the sides, but still with about 7 minutes left.

Then our goalie Ciaran O'Donoghue pulled off a great point blank save to keep our margin intact, but not for long. Mullagh shortly after rifled over a point and now there was four points in it. It took brave and solid defending by the Kinvara backs to keep Mullagh out, and every lad played his part. Mullagh managed a goal in the last minute, but ran out of time as Kinvara took a great win and a valuable two points.

Kinvara had heros all over the field, with all backs in particular playing excellent. Up front, all players defended well and put the Mullagh backs under pressure, with second half full-forward Cathal Murray leading the way.

So, a great win for Kinvara, but plenty more to do in this group to qualify in the top four.
