And the game is on!!!
3 mins gone: Kinvara playing against slight breeze here in the opening half. Lively exchanges to begin with with all signs of any nerves well gone at this stage. Kinvara have taken an early lead 0-1 to 0-0.
5 mins gone: Kinvara 0-2 to St. Gabriels 0-1.
6 mins gone:
Kinvara 0-2, St. Gabriels 0-2. This match has all the signs of going right down to the wire.
GOAL!!! And its the seasiders who raise the games first green flag.
Almost 20 mins gone and we now lead 1-2 to 0-2. St. Gabriels probably a bit more on top in this opening half with the breeze so that a very important goal for us.
By the way, we 10 years ago in 2004 we had an historic win in the County U21A Hurling final. We beat 1-5 to 1-4 against Tommie Larkins. Hi to Brian Kirwan and Mike McCormack who both played that day and are following this match in Australia. G'day!
Approaching halftime and its now Kinvara 1-3 to St. Gabriels 0-5. Some great defending by Kinvara. But wait, Kinvara closing on on goal.......
Another green flag for Kinvara and we now lead 2-3 to 0-5. 23 mins gone. And another point now for Kinvara, we now lead 2-4 to 0-5. Keep it up lads!
Halftime in U14 football final:
Its Kinvara 2-4 lead St. Gabriels 0-5. We probably relived to get in with such a lead, as in fairness St. Gabriels had us under a lot of pressure and they had the majority of possession. Towards the end of the first half, they had our backs under constant pressure, with our lads holding firm, and then we broke up the field to score another goal, followed by a point.
A lot to do in the second half
And we back on here in Duggan Park
Its Kinvara 2-4 to St. Gabriels 0-6. The Kinvara boys can expect a right battle in the second half. Our last Juvenile Final won was in 1988 when our U14 footballers won the C Championship final in Pearse Stadium. We played with a huge wind in first half and led 3-3 to 0-0 at halftime. Held on to win 3-3 to 1-3 with some (a lot of) heroic defending. I thinking we need some of that spirit today.
17 mins left, and its now Kinvara 2-4 to St. Gabriels 0-7. Next score is vital, and lets hope its for us!
15 mins left. And its now all square. Credit to St. Gabriels for getting back into this. We need a few scores now.....and fast!
10 mins left: St. Gabriels now 1-11 lead Kinvara 2-4. We now four points behind, and really St. Gabriels are the team in form in this second half.
7 mins left:...Kinvara get third St. Gabriels 1-11 lead Kinvara 3-4. Come'on lads!
But wait........St. Gabriels get another goal themselves to put the lead back out to 4 points. They now ahead 2-11 to 3-4. In fairness, its a cracking game of football, and very very exciting. 6 mins left.
4 mins left.....still St. Gabriels 2-11 to Kinvara 3-4. We need goals and need them fast! Still very exciting here.
2 mins left, and we still the same 4 points in arrears. We are putting everything into this but cant break the Kilrickle defence.
But we still two behind now. St. Gabriels 2-12 to Kinvara 4-4. Another goal would be nice lads. Approaching injury time.
All over...hard luck Kinvara...Final Score was St. Gabriels 2-12 beat Kinvara 4-4.
It was a cracking game and probably the winners were the better side on the day. But credit to our lads who battled right til the end and contributed to a brillant spectacle and advert for juvenile football in county galway.
