Thurs 25th July, in Kinvara

KINVARA............................. 4-3
MICHAEL CUSACKS..............0-0

And so the 3rd game of the under 12 hurling league came to pass.  With 3 points in the bag the boys were looking to build upon a good performance against Gort in round two when they faced Michael Cusacks in the third round.  The coaching ticket of Francis Comyn, Eamon Keely, Michael Helebert and Niall Byrne looked for the boys to back up their round two performance with another strong game seeking both intensity and sustained effort from 1 - 18.

The Kinvara lads hit their straps quickly with Brendan Linnane pouncing to shake the Cusacks net early in the game and Daragh Helebert knocking over a tidy point to settle the early nerves. Once again the midfield/half back axis of Kinvara incorporating Dean Ivers, Patrick Byrne, Darren Kilkelly, Danny Travis, Barry Britton were in fine form harrying and tackling with unrelenting pressure and setting up numerous attacks for the Kinvara forwards who continued to exert huge pressure on the Cusacks rearguard.  This intensity and covering of each other has been a strong part of the teams recent successes.

With defensive duties being marshalled strongly as ever by Conaill Larrissey from full back and Darren Kilkelly refusing to yield an inch in a strong performance, young Ciaran O Donoghue in goals was rarely troubled in goals despite a few hairy moments of indecision when the sliotar found its way through the defending players in front of him.  A stronger voice and more command of his box will be needed for the challenges that lie ahead but two clean sheets in two games shows that steady improvement has already been secured.

Our corners were well marshalled by Aodhan O'Hanrahan and Rossa Barry with second half substitute - Oran Frawley also performing well considering his recent return from holidays. Up front both Linnane and Helebert posed the greatest threat, and they were ably assisted by Karim Mullery, Jake Comyn, Donal Keely, and Aidan O'Sullivan. Conor Burke came on for the second game running and with his strong running and good handling caused the Cusacks defence further heart-ache. Another sub Michael Corless also played his part and got stuck in from the off.

On a final scoreline of 4-3 to 0-0 the boys can be proud of another good performance but will have noted the young age of their opponents and the several "lucky" escapes our own goal mouth had during the game.  With St Thomas's to come they will know that relying on such luck will not suffice next time out.  Management will be looking for a continuation of the pressure game and improved defensive calling for high balls in round four.  With players returning from holidays for round four, competition for places is strong with management happy to make changes and bring in players showing the required appetite for hard work and commitment".
