U21 B Hurling Championship, Round 2, Saturday 23rd Feb 2013.

The Kinvara U21’s scored a great win in this U21 B Hurling Championship Round 2 fixture, that has them now qualified for this year’s preliminary quarter-finals. There was much promise after the first day’s defeat to Portumna, but the lads had it all to do here against the spirited Moycullen side, who looked so good for much of this match. But it was Kinvara who left the pitch in Castlegar the happier as they progress in the championship.

The first half started with a Moycullen point, but it didn’t take long for Kinvara to get into their stride of this match.  By the 10th minute Kinvara had shot an unanswered 1-4 to leave them 6 points ahead. But the balance of the first half belonged to the westerners as they fought back and overtook Kinvara by the interval. Moycullen levelled the match on 1-4 each after 22 minutes, and went in at the interval leading on a scoreline of Moycullen 1-6, Kinvara 1-5.

Kinvara needed to get the first score on the resumption, but it was Moycullen who raised the first flag as they pointed to double their lead. The sides then exchanged a couple of points each to leave the score Moycullen 1-10 to Kinvara 1-9. Then midway through the second half, Kinvara shot the game changer, as a well worked goal gave the lead back to Kinvara. The score now read Kinvara 2-9 to Moycullen 1-10, and for the rest of the game it was a case of Kinvara battling to hang on til the final whistle. With some heroic defending and hard tackling all over the field, the purple and gold held on so score a great win by just two points.

Credit to both sides for giving a thrilling hour’s entertainment. Moycullen will be disappointed but will have a consolation quarter-final in the C Grade to look forward to, where we can be sure they can excel. Kinvara, although getting the win, never reached their full potential, and for much of this match looked second best behind the Moycullen challenge. But a win is a win, and this match will bring them on more, where we can now look ahead with confidence to the next game.
