KINVARA 1-2........TOMMIE LARKINS 1-1

This opening match of the 2013 U14 B Hurling Championship was a tough, tight tense affair with two teams giving it their all in an effort to gain the spoils. At the end it was the Kinvara lads who held out for a good win and to kick start the clubs juvenile championship season with two points. Played in Kinvara's Faiche Padraic, the conditions were dry but very cold and credit to both sides for playing a sporting game in good spirit, that never lacked any determination and intensity.

The visitors from Woodford side started well in the first half, with the ball played mostly around the Kinvara defence. However it was Kinvara to score first and that was from the stick of Colm Keady-Taabal who shot home a great goal. That score was followed 5 mins later by a Gerard Linnane free after the Tommie Larkins defence were caught fouling. Tommie's did put the pressure on before the break and got their reward with a well taken point from play. Half-time: Kinvara 1-1, Tommie Larkins 0-1.

Both sides knew what they had to do in the second half, and it was the Kinvara lads who responded the better as they extended the lead after Colm Keady-Taabal shot over a fine point. However, from that score onwards it was pretty much a pressure game as Tommie Larkins upped their game and went in the hunt for those vital scores. The ball was firmly camped in the Kinvara half for the remainder of the match, with the odd Kinvara attack thrown in, but it was quickly dealt with by the Tommie Larkins rearguard. The Kinvara defence stood firm and held their ground, led soundly by full back and captain Neil Huban. He was ably assisted by his fellow defenders who gave nothing away, not even a foul. Tommie Larkins did score a goal however, but it came too little too late as it was practically the last puck of the match.

So, a win for Kinvara, and an important one as there are many tough games ahead. There was areas of their game that were impressive, but also improvement will be needed to advance further in the group, such is the standard and quality that awaits them.

Next up is the spin to Abbeyknockmoy on Saturday 16th March.
